Inscribed into the register of monuments, impressive ruins of late Baroque church and monastery complex of Barefoot Carmelites rises on a hill above the river Osława bend. It is one of a few preserved defensive monasteries in Poland. After a mysterious fire, from the whole structure survived only the huge walls of the church dedicated to Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary with unusual octagonal nave, joined with the remains of the monastery and accompanying buildings. In front of the church there is a monument of Our Lady of the Scapular – a patron of mountain region of Caramel. A great attraction is a viewing platform placed on top of the 22 meter-high monastery tower.
Church and monastery complex funded by province governor of Wołyń - Jan Stadnicki, was built in 1700-1730. Defence of Caramel was the last battle of Bar Confederation. In the beginning of the 19th century, monastery became the center of independent movement and one can assume, that Austrian authorities, troubled by this fact, contributed to setting this devastating fire. Soon afterwards secularization of the monastery took place and despite many attempts to rebuild this old seat of Carmelites, it never get up from the ruins. It is said, that a ghost of a monk visits this place at night...
