Museum of Cemetery Art

Local name: Muzeum Sztuki Cmentarnej

The cemetery covers the area of around 4,6 ha and consists of about 12 thousand tombstones which are valuable exhibits of Museum of Cemetery Art. It contains the 19th-century monuments of different styles, starting from antique and ending on Art Nouveau and modernism, which were made from the best materials and designed by famous artists.

The atmosphere of this place is different from Jewish necropolises - it's more comparable to traditional cemeteries with German symbols and inscriptions. The interesting form of the cemetery is a result of the doing of the 19th-century Enlightenment movement Haskalah which aimed to renew the Jewish community by the promotion of the development of culture and education.

The necropolis was established because of the quickly growing Jewish district which in the first half of the 19th century had 18 thousand inhabitants. The first funeral took place on 17th November 1856. The cemetery was expanded three times. In 1912, the pre-burial chapel and the administrative-residential building, which no longer exist, were added. The interesting fact is that the tombstones preserved the bullet holes from the battle for Wrocław which occurred during World War II.
