Basilica of St. Mary and St. Michael the Archangel
Local name: Bazylika WNMP i św. Michała Archanioła
The most important monument of Trzemeszno is the Basilica of the Assumption of St. Mary and Sts. Michael the Archangel. Behind the baroque façade of the church are much older walls and fittings, whose history dates back to the first Piasts.
The basilica dates back to the 12th century. A Romanesque church was built at the time, where a convent of regular canons was located. Over the centuries this building has changed its form many times and its present Baroque shape owes its rebuilding from the 17th century. The greatest damage suffered during the Second World War. The completely burned interior was reconstructed in the middle of the 20th century.
Trzemeszno Basilica is a three-nave structure, built on a cross plan, with a massive dome above the nave. The presbytery is surrounded by a wreath of chapels. The façade with two low towers has a porch with a terrace in front of it. Inside you can see remnants of old churches standing here. There are thick, Romanesque walls in the basement of the tower. Massive columns from the same period are assembled under the choir. Gothic pillars and osteoporous windows have survived. On the ceiling of the dome there is a monumental Baroque polychromy by Franciszek Smuglewicz, which was reconstructed after the war destruction.
