Old Town Square

Local name: Rynek Stargo Miasta

The market square in Gniezno is part of the Old Town, it is located on Wzgórze Panieńskie. There is a fountain in its center. The buildings in the market square are characterized by high syncretism - the buildings were erected in different historical periods. The outline of the buildings that were located here before the fire of 1819, which consumed most of Gniezno, was marked with red brick on the square.

Bolesława Chrobrego Street, the main artery of the city, begins in the square. In its upper part it is a promenade lined with elegant tenement houses from the beginning of the 20th century.

In the Middle Ages, the Market Square belonged to one of the city's boroughs, at that time it was surrounded by walls. During its reconstruction after the fire, the former moat and remains of the walls were removed, and the level of the market was significantly lowered.
