Church of the Holy Spirit

Local name: Kościół św. Ducha

Church of the Holy Spirit is a late-baroque, eighteenth-century temple in the interior concealing elements of original Rococo furnishings, with a beautiful main altar. Also noteworthy are the door to the sacristy made in 1756, decorated with intarsia technique, consisting of creating a pattern using various shades of wood.

In addition to valuable furnishings, the temple can also boast an interesting history, because its creation was a response to the Catholics' takeover of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Toruń Old Town, remaining for many years in the hands of evangelicals. The permission to build a house of prayer did not allow for the building of a traditional church, which is why the first structure was not equipped with a tower. It was built only in the 19th century.

The object served as a Protestant temple until 1945, when it was taken over by the Jesuits, transforming it into an academic church. At the end of the 1980s, the fire destroyed the original antique organs and part of the equipment. The new instrument style resembles its predecessor.
