Józef Szalay Museum of Pieniny Mountains
Local name: Muzeum Pienińskie im. Józefa Szalaya
Pieniny Museum named after Józef Szalay is located in the border guard building in Szlachtowa. It shows collections related to the history of Szczawnica, the life of highlanders living in the area of the spa and the people of Jan Wiktor and Józef Szalay, who contributed to the popularization of the village.
Until 2012, the Pieniny Museum was located in Szczawnica in the "Palace" villa at Józef Dietl Square. After the spa buildings were recovered by the Stadnicki heirs, the last owners of Szczawnica Museum lost their headquarters. In 2014, they were reopened in Szlachtowa in the modernized border guard building.
The Pieniny Museum has in its collection photos, documents and souvenirs related to the functioning of the Szczawnica spa. You can see, among others, painted house emblems, whose creation was popularized by Józef Szalay. Ethnographic collections occupy a large part of the exhibition. They concern Polish and Ruthenian highlanders living in the vicinity of Szczawnica. Home appliances, tools and home furnishings are shown here. There is also a large collection of folk art and folk crafts.
