The monument presenting Jan Czekanowski, a pioneer of Polish African studies, anthropologist and ethnographer, is in a form of a monument-bench. The monument shows a professor dressed in a costume characteristic for 19th-century travelers, and the bench itself is presented as his luggage. On the bench are the names and logos of the sponsors of the monument, shown in the form of hotel stickers. This is the first of this kind, a monument-bench in Szczecin.
The monument was made of bronze by artist Yousouf Toure from Burkina Faso, who creates under the pseudonym Derme. Then it went airway from Africa to Berlin, and eventually it came to Szczecin. The official unveiling of the monument took place on 19th of May, 2012. The ceremony was complemented by a small exhibition of photos from the exhibition "Nowak's Africa", presenting the achievements of Kazimierz Nowak, a Polish traveler who in the 1930s traveled Africa alone from north to south and back.Less
