Church of Saint John the Baptist is a neo-Gothic hall church built on a Latin cross plan. Since 2008, it has been having the honorary title of the minor basilica, granted by Pope Benedict XVI. It has characteristic metal gargoyles in the shape of dragons, placed on corners and portals. Inside, attention is drawn to, among others, 19th-century neo-Gothic side altars, a pulpit, and stained glass windows.
The temple had been built in the years 1888-1890 and until the early 1930s it was the only Roman Catholic church in Szczecin. During the World War II the building was significantly damaged - the roof, the bell tower and the tower helmet have been lost. Although it was rebuilt almost immediately after the end of war, the original shape of the tented roof was restored only in the 1980s. Inside the temple commemorative plaques were embedded, including bilingual, Polish-German, commemorating German clerics, arrested, tortured, and murdered by the Gestapo in 1942.Less
