Fontann Avenue is the current name of the Avenue of Pope John Paul II. It is one of the most important tourist attractions of the city of Szczecin. It is a great place for a walk and a little relaxation. There are fountains, cycling paths, modern sculptures, as well as valuable species of trees.
One of the most interesting works on the avenue is the five-meter Monument of the Sailor. Sculpture depicts a figure standing at a control wheel. The man is dressed in a sailor jacket with a collar and wide pants. On his head is a sailor's cap. The monument is made of copper sheet and the pedestal on which it is made of concrete covered with granite tiles.
The alley itself was created from the 1880s to the twenties of the last century. Initially, it was trading. The street was destroyed by bombing during World War II. In 1974, the fountains were erected and Griffith's statue was erected, and in 1980 the Sailor's Monument was unveiled.
