City walls
Local name: Mury miejskie
The city walls in Świebodzice is a unique object. Despite numerous fires and attempts to dismantle them, among others by the French in 1809, about 80% of medieval fortification systems have survived to this day.
The defensive walls were probably built in the 15th century in the place of a wooden and earth palisade. Field and broken stone was used to build them. At the beginning two gates led to the city, later a third one was added. In the east there was the Świdnicka Gate, in the west the Bolkowska Gate (upper) and Strzegomska Gate (lower).
The defense system was successively expanded. At the end of the eighteenth century, the walls included 10 towers, 3 gates and castle fortifications. In addition, they were complemented by a moat and earth embankments, which were liquidated at the beginning of the nineteenth century.
