Dam in Solina it the biggest dam in Poland. It is 81,8 meters high and 664 meters long. It was built in 1960s on the rivers San and Solinka. Dam's interior is open for visitors. As a result of the construction the artificial lake Solina was created (called the Sea of Bieszczady Mountains). At the bottom of the lake are previous villages sites (among others: Solina and Wolkowyja), which were sunk during filing the reservoir.
Several myths aroused around the history of the dam's construction. One of them is information, that from the top one can see the villages houses (like church towers). This is incorrect though, because before the beginning of filling the reservoir these areas were prepared and all the buildings were removed. The first project of hydroelectric development of San through the construction of a dam was created in 1921. Geological and hydrological research endeavors were interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1950s the new project of development the Solina valley was made. Initial commissioning of the first turbine took place in 1986. The construction of the dam lasted almost 9 years.Less
