Skierniewice Roundhouse
Local name: Parowozownia Skierniewice
Polish Association of Railway Enthusiasts enables to visit more than 100 vehicles, among others: steam engines, diesel locomotives, as well as passenger and freight carriages. The most unique exhibit is a self-propelled car wagon “Wittfeld” from 1913. A trip around this open-air museum allows to learn about the functioning of the hand-held telephone exchange, which is the only exhibit of this kind in the country.
A visit to this place is an opportunity to see technological facilities of railways from the inside. Moreover, a collection of technical devices related to railway, smithy or a workhouse is worth seeing.
An engine house was built in 1845 together with a railway line running to Warsaw. Only in the end of the nineteenth century, a technical support area was extended to 24 seats. It was one of the most important railway lines called “Warsaw-Vienna railway”.
