Castle in Rawa Mazowiecka
Local name: Zamek w Rawie Mazowieckiej
The flanking tower and part of the walls are the only remnants of the huge Gothic stronghold built at the crotch of the Rylka and the Rawka River. It is opened to the public and consists of, among others, knight's hall, and the exhibition dedicated to defensive castles in West Masovia.
Built in the second half of the 14th century, the Gothic castle of Masovian dukes for a short time was a headquarters of Rawa Voivodeship and, since the first half of the 16th century it stored the Rawa Treasure which was paid for elite mercenaries, including Polish Hussars and Cossack cavalry. It was plundered during the Swedish deluge and then partially dismantled during the Prussian Partition. It remained in a state of ruin until the partial reconstruction carried out from 1954 to 1958.According to the legend, the castle is haunted by White Lady - the ghost of Duchess Ludmila murdered by her envious husband - Duke Siemowit III of Masovia. There are many indications that it is this legend which inspired William Shakespeare to write the Winter's Tale.Less
