The Church of St. Anthony of Padua is a part of the defensive monastery complex of the Franciscans of Primitive Observance in Przemyśl. Its characteristic neo-Renaissance facade made of red brick is an effect of the renovation carried out in the 19th century. The interior consists of, among others, Rococo altars, the 18th-century crucifix by Tomasz Hutter, and frescos by Stanisław Stroiński.
Founded by Hermenelaus Tyrawski, the church and monastery complex was built from 1641 to 1664 in the place of the wooden church which burnt during the raid led by George I Rákóczi. In the second half of the 17th century, thanks to the efforts of Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro, it was surrounded by walls with embrasures and four flanking towers. It served as a barbican for the Lviv Gate which stood here in the past. The single-nave church is connected with the vast monastery. Its undergrounds are a place of rest of Andrzej Fredro. The flanking tower, remnant of the former stronghold, is situated next to the church. It's also worth to take a look at the monument of the heroic guardian - Father Szykowski - which can be found by the wall. In 1672, when the city was attacked by Tatars, Szykowski was a savior who commanded Przemyśl's inhabitants and crushed the attackers.Less
