Fort III

Local name: Fort III

Fort III is one of the eighteen fortresses comprising of Fortress Poznań. Facility is located on site of the New Zoo. It includes above-ground and under-ground parts. Inside one can admire labyrinth of rooms and equipment of the Prussian Army, gain knowledge about the living conditions of soldiers and the history of fortress.

Fort dates back to the second half of 19th century. It was surrounded by a dry moat, which were guarded by as many as five caponiers. Entrance to the building was protected by a blockhouse and also a bascule bridge. In the under-ground part, barracks and a huge powder magazine, among others, were located.

Facility was built by Prussian Army and it was in the hands of the occupiers until the Second World War. Later it was conquered by Russian soldiers and partly destroyed. Nowadays it is open for visitor and also is a place, where bats hibernate.
