Himmler Hochwald's quarters

Local name: Kwatera Himmlera Hochwald

Himler's field headquarters was called "Hochwald", meaning a large forest. Near the quarter there was a railway line connecting the cities of Giżycko and Węgorzewo, which definitely facilitated the delivery of building materials. Like the "Wolf's Lair", "Hochwald" was built by the Todt paramilitary organization.

The lodging consisted of about 10 buildings intended for barracks, telephone and telegraph exchange, sauna, 2 brick guardhouses, a cinema, one or two casinos, an underground garage, a canteen, a central heating boiler room, buildings with basements, a transformer station, as well as an arrest with 5 cells and a wooden post. The thickness of the walls and ceilings of anti-aircraft shelters located in the depths of the forest was 2 m, which provided safe shelter from bombs weighing up to 500 kg.

Himmler hosted several important characters in his quarters, among others General Andrei Vlasova, co-founder of the Russian Liberation Army. On January 21, 1945, after the command post was moved to the "Wolf's Lair", the fortifications were blown up. Some of the buildings were dismantled after the war, while others burned down.
