Nowa Sól City Museum

Local name: Muzeum Miejskie

The Municipal Museum in Nowa Sola occupies three buildings with a garden. There are sections here: historical with documents, maps, numismatics and military; artistic with paintings, drawings, sculptures and artistic crafts; nature exhibit flora and fauna nadodrzańskiej and scientific-educational.

The main building was built in 1883 as a gift to the owner of the local thread mill Alexander Gruschwitz for his son Alfred. One year later the other buildings were built. The first New York City museum was built in 1916 in Witosa Street. In 1947 a museum was opened in the Gruschwitz building where all the exhibits were moved.

During World War II most of the exhibits were destroyed. Initially, the museum was a typical regional institution, devoted to the history of Nowa Sól and its surroundings, and later, more departments were created. The artistic department counts more than 1,500 works by New York artists. In contrast, the natural section includes over 1360 exhibits.
