Archaeological Open-Air Museum

Local name: Skansen Archeologiczny

The well-preserved motte-and-bailey castle, also called Napoleon's Mound, is located on the peninsula on Kownacki Lake. It is surrounded by the moat and palisade. Today, it is occupied by the Open-Air Museum. It presents the wooden watchtower with observation deck, fishing shelters, and the forgery. The facility also organizes archeological picnics.

It is one of the most interesting objects of medieval culture in East Greater Poland. It underwent many renovations throughout the last years - it had the moat cleaned, and tower, hut, and palisade on the mound's top reconstructed. It is also supplied with water and equipped with modern toilets.

The origin of the castle date back to the 13th-14th century. According to the excavation's results, the main building of the site was a defensive tower built on a pentagonal plan. The remainings of the forgery, parts of a crossbow, quarrel heads, and agricultural and carpentry tools were discovered during the archeological works. Wares made of bone, glass dishes and scale pans for weighing bullion indicate that the site's inhabitants were of high social status.
