Śledziowe tenement houses, also called Śledziówki, are located in Legnica, in the in-market block. It is a complex of eight three-storey historic tenement houses. Four of them were built in the Renaissance style, another four in the classical style. Established in the place of former herring stalls. That's where their name comes from.
The Herring House Complex was established in the 16th century in the vicinity of the Old Town Hall in Legnica. The first mention of Śledziówki dates back to 1574. The buildings have been rebuilt several times. The building closest to the town hall has Gothic cellars.
Two of the tenement houses are decorated with sgraffits, i.e. wall paintings popular in the Renaissance. They come from around 1570. In later centuries, the decorations were covered with plaster to reveal them again in 1934. An important Mannerist decorative element is the shield with the coat of arms of the Legnica-Brest principality and the images of a male and female head.
