The Museum of Toys and Play in Kielce is the biggest and the oldest museum of that type in Poland. It is located in the buildings of the former market halls nearby Freedom Square. The museum gathered few thousand toys from around the world. The oldest items have more than 200 years. The museum also organizes temporary exhibitions and meetings for the entire families.
The museum functions since 1979, in 2006 was moved to its present building, where could at last fully show its rich collections. The collections are divided into five permanent exhibitions. The most important one is the Toy City which gathers the oldest items. Dolls, teddy bears, toy soldiers, various games, sets of blocks, dishes and furniture were placed inside the toy tenement houses and dollhouses. Recreated streets and rooms are ruled by the toys. The toy workshop which shows how toys from the 18th and 19th century were made can be found at the end of the exhibition.The rest of the exhibition displays models, Polish toys from the Polish People's Republic, and Zabawajki - folk toys such as cutouts, needleworks and woodworks.
