Mały Staw glacial lake

Local name: Jezioro polodowcowe Mały Staw

Located at the height of 1183m, the lake together with the Samotnia refuge placed above is one of the most picturesque places in Karkonosze. Samotnia, one of the oldest refuges in Poland, has 49 rooms, buffet, medical services of Mountain Volunteer Search and Rescue, climbing wall and Tourist Information Center.

The blue track which leads to Śnieżka can be found nearby. The mountain flow-through lake which covers the area of 2,8ha is frozen for a significant part of the year and its depth amounts only up to 7,3m. The charm of the lake is an exceptionally blue water which temperature doesn't exceed 14 degrees Celsius even in the summer.

Łomnica flows through the lake. The Small Pond together with the monumental refuge is a place often visited by tourists in Karkonosze. The first mentions about a house by the Small Pond date back to 1670. The current shape of the building was achieved thanks to the expansion conducted in 1934. In 1945 the refuge was taken over by Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society and is well run to this day.
