Narrow gauge railway Hajnówka-Topiło

Local name: Kolejka wąskotorowa Hajnówka-Topiło

The narrow gauge railway, used in the past to transport timber, is currently a tourist attraction, managed by the Hajnowka Forest District. It runs through the Bialowieza Forest on two routes - from Hajnowka to Topil (11 km) and to the Leśna River Valley (6 km). Drive to Topil takes about an hour. The train stops at the points formed along the route of the didactic route, among others. on the monumental oaks, in the valley of the Leśna River and in the reserve of Głęboki Kąt.

At the starting station in Hajnówka (at the railway siding) a locomotive and a composition of historic wagons is presented. At present, 30 trains are operated by a diesel locomotive - "clothing" is available only on special orders. In 2016 a general renovation of the line and rolling stock was carried out, after which only original rails remained.

The first narrow-gauge railway in the Bialowieza Forest began to run in 1916. They were built by the Germans, who after the seizure of these lands began intensive logging. After Poland regained its independence, the woodland railway was expanded - in 1939 the total length of the routes was 360 km. Operation of the narrow gauge as a means of transport of wood ended in 1992.
