European bison reserve
Local name: Rezerwat pokazowy żubrów
The European Bison Show Reserve is a place where animals living in the Białowieża Forest can be seen in conditions close to natural. Built in the interwar period, it initially served as a protection for the European bisons and was a place of restitution of these beautiful animals.
The reserve includes species of ungulates from the primeval forest - European bisons, roe-deers, deers, mooses. Visitors can also see wolves, raccoon dogs, lynxes, and tarpan horses, as well as a żubrons, which is a hybrid of European bison and domestic cattle. Wandering along the routes of the forest, one can rarely see the king of the forest, so it is worth to visit the reserve to see these unique animals. The facility has specially marked paths for visitors. Between them there are runs for animals and signs with detailed information on individual species. The reserve is located a few kilometers behind Białowieża. The footbridge "Ribs of Bison" (Żebra Żubra) has its begining next to it. Opposite the entrance there are souvenir stalls. Visitors can buy there artists' products and local delicacies, e.g. honey from nearby apiaries.Less
