Church of St. George

Local name: Kościół św. Jerzego

The church is located on the Lech Hill next to the Gniezno Cathedral. It was created on the remains of a stone mound, which was an object of pagan worship until the 10th century. It is worth seeing the exposed fragments of the Romanesque wall, the wooden main altar and two side altars from the 18th century. On the nave vault we will see images of the Holy Trinity and evangelists, while above the presbytery of the holy apostles Peter and Paul.

At the turn of the century, the church fell victim to fires twice. Its current appearance dates back to the 18th century. The rebuilt temple has retained its Romanesque shape, while the interior design is in the Baroque style. It is a one-nave church with a small presbytery, which, like the nave, was covered with a sail vault.

The entrance to the temple is decorated with a bas-relief depicting St. George fighting the dragon. Outside, at the entrance to the church, there is a plaque commemorating the 25th anniversary of Greater Poland Scouting from 1937. Behind the church are the eighteenth and nineteenth-century residences of priests and canons, which are currently the seat of the archdiocese museum.
