Wisłoujście Fortress

Local name: Twierdza Wisłoujście

The historic fortress Wisłoujście stretching over the Dead Vistula River is one of the most impressive fortifications in Gdańsk. This 14th-century building was of key importance in many battles, and today is one of the more eagerly visited branches of the Historical Museum of the City of Gdańsk.

The Wisłoujście fortification consists of a lot of historic buildings: a brick wreath, the officers' houses, a fort carré building, a rampart and the most distinctive cylindrical tower, serving as a lighthouse years ago. Due to numerous damages and repairs made at various times in history, the architectural style of the entire Wisłoujście complex can not be clearly defined. Nevertheless, as in many other buildings in Gdansk, the fortification manifests Gothic style.

The location of the Wisłoujście fortress made it a very important strategic place in its glory years - from the level of the fortress, you could control the movement of ships approaching the port of Gdansk.
