St. Nicholas Church

Local name: Kościół św. Mikołaja

The 12th-century St. Nicholas Church is one of the oldest churches in Gdańsk. A Dominican monastery is located next to it to this day. Despite its age, the basilica preserved great shape. It avoided the devastating military operations of World War II carried out in the entire city.

St. Nicholas Church was built in the 12th century on the crossroads of two important merchant routes. The church is an example of Gothic sacral architecture. Its interior, however, represents Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo styles.

The most wonderful and important parts of the equipment are Renaissance main altar, Gothic Pietà, painting of Mother of God with the Child from the 15th century, a crucifix from chancel beam, and epitaphs of Pomeranian nobility.
