Milk Churn Gate

Local name: Brama Stągiewna

Milk Churn Gate is one of the few remains of the city fortifications. Located on Granary Island, the monumental gate was used as a stronghold which, in the 16th century, protected the city from intruders.

Its name comes from the shape of towers included in the construction which resemble milk churns. The gate is composed of two towers: taller - Stągwia, and shorter - Stągiewka. Both are brick and draw inspiration from Gothic architecture.

According to historians, the original project plan of Milk Churn Gate consisted of three towers - one taller and two shorter - but only two of them were built. The taller tower has 20 m and was used as a defense and a vantage point.
