Monumental Mariacka Gate is one of the water gates of Gdańsk Main City. It was built in late-Gothic style on an elongated rectangle plan. The coat of arms of Gdańsk held by lions can be seen on the side of Mariacka Street above the asymmetrically situated passage while the coat of arms of Poland (placed at the center), and coats of arms of Gdańsk and East Prussia (at the sides) can be found on the side of Mołtawa. There is also the built-in plaque dedicated to German traveler and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt who was an honorable member of Danzig Research Society.
The gate was built probably at the end of the 15th century. In the 16th century, it was no longer used for military purposes and was rebuilt into apartments. It was destroyed in 1945. During the renovation in the years between 1958 and 1961, part of the rooms was connected to the neighboring House of Danzig Research Society while the stepped gables were built over the passages. The reconstructed object was donated to the Archeological Museum.Less
