Jelitkowo Beach is 40-meter wide and has fine soft sand, and well-developed infrastructure (changing rooms, water slides, football court, outdoor gym, beach and sports equipment rental). Bus and tram stops, food courts and pubs can be found nearby.
Jelitkowo Beach is popular among enthusiasts of sunbathing for a long time. First holiday-makers rented guests rooms in fisherman houses. At the end of the 19th century, inns and shops targeted at tourists started to pop up. In 1907, the pier for pleasure boats was constructed while Dom Zdrojowy (spa) and tennis courts were built in later years. The pier was destroyed during World War II and wasn't rebuilt. One of the interesting features of the beach is winter sea-bathings. They have a long tradition which was started by Jan Jerzy Haffner, a doctor who arrived in Gdańsk together with Napoleonic army at the beginning of the 19th century. Strengthening health by icy water lost its popularity in the times of the Free City of Danzig. The trend wasn't back until the first half of the 1970s.Less
