Copernicus Tower

Local name: Wieża Kopernika

In the years 1510-1543 it was the property of Nicolaus Copernicus, who as a canon from Frombork was obliged to buy it and keep it under the so-called winter canonies. Contrary to the painting vision of Jan Matejko, this place did not serve as an astronomical observatory. The roofing of the top floor and the building's small dimensions that could not accommodate astronomical instruments did not allow this.

The astronomer took measurements in the garden of his outdoor summer canonies. The unsecured observatory was destroyed by the Teutonic Knights during the invasion. It is believed that the scholar moved his instruments to the current Radziejowski Tower and continued research there.

The Copernicus Tower was built in the fourteenth century and is the oldest element of the fortifications of the Cathedral Hill. It had a basement and five floors. The highest ones were rebuilt many times between the 15th and 18th centuries. The tower was burned in 1945, it was not reconstructed until 1965. Less than 50 years later, the Warmian historian Eugen Brachvogl founded a memorial chamber dedicated to Copernicus.
