Rotunda of St. Nicholas

Local name: Rotunda św. Mikołaja

Located inside: Castle Hill

Church of Sts. Nicholas and St. Wenceslas in Cieszyn, otherwise known as the rotunda of Sts. Nicholas is a Romanesque building from the 12th century. It is one of the oldest monuments of Polish architecture. It is located on the Romanesque Route, which runs along the Romanesque monuments throughout Poland. It is open to the public for tourists, and there are still holy masses.

The historic church in Cieszyn, today known for its magnificent tourist attraction, once served as a castle chapel and castle church. It was built of limestone on a circle. The gothic character of the temple gave way to the classicist style, introduced in 1839 with the redevelopment: in the walls were then struck large semicircular windows and plastered raw elevation. In the 20th century, as a result of maintenance work, rotunda was restored to its original architectural style.

Cieszyn Rotunda of Sts. Due to its excellent state of behavior and impressive age, Nicholas was placed on the back of a 20-zloty banknote.
