Church of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist

Local name: Kościół Ścięcia św. Jana Chrzciciela

The Church of the Cross of St. John the Baptist in Chojnice, received the honorary title of the smaller Basilica given by John Paul II for distinctive antique and liturgical values. The temple was built between 1340 and 1360 and is the oldest sacred building in Chojnice. In 1466, the patronage over the basilica was taken by Kazimierz Jagiellończyk.

The church has been rebuilt several times after numerous fires and devastations, and its original design has not been preserved. The few surviving elements are the baroque baptismal font of the early eighteenth century and the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary built after the Reformation and the recovery of the church from the hands of Lutheran.

The walls of the church are decorated with frescoes in 1957, commemorating important events in the life of the parish. One of the graves from the Middle Ages can be seen through the glass floor. In the basement are also the bodies of outstanding painters: Hermann Han and Francis Haeflich.
