The fortified walls of Chojny are a remnant of medieval fortifications that surround almost the entire Old Town. Currently, this entire area has been entered in the register of monuments. Three gates, fortified towers and a watchtower complement the defensive walls. Two gates have survived to modern times: the Barnkowska Gate with a viewing terrace and a toothed defensive wall, and a beautiful Gothic secular gate. The third gate was pulled down in the 19th century.
The oldest fragments of the walls were built in the second half of the 13th century, while those whose outline is clearly visible today probably come from the 14th century. They reached their final form a hundred years later. Initially, they were built of field stones, which were gradually replaced by brick walls. The preserved defensive walls make up about 50% of the original form.
