Situated on Chełm Hill, the cathedral complex's towers of the late-Baroque Basilica of the Birth of the Virgin Mary tower over the city. It houses two paintings from the 18th century, the late-Baroque, richly decorated antependium made of silver plates, and many more parts of the decor.
The basilica is surrounded by 17th-century buildings with the Baroque Uściług Gate from 1616. What also brings attention is the beautiful southern building with picturesque arcaded and pillar cloisters, and the Palace of Uniate Bishops. The monastery of Basilian monks built between 1640 and 1649 and the belfry are located nearby. The viewpoint with a sight on Chełmno and area can be found on the top of the 40-meter tower. The Mausoleum of Victims of Hitler's and Stalin's Terror is located on the ground floor. In the beginning, the belfry was of Bizantine-Orthodox character, however, after the rebuilt, it has become an integral part of the complex. The basilica, which dates back to the 13th century and the times of the first church built here - an Orthodox church dedicated to Bogurodzica - has also undergone numerous reconstructions. The building lacks many parts of the equipment, nevertheless it is a very valuable architectonic monument.Less
