Death Valley

Local name: Dolina Śmierci

The place of martyrology 1200-1400 people, including Jewish origin, inhabitants of Bydgoszcz, Fordon and Dobrzyn, commemorates the monument designed by Jozef Makowski, symbolizing the broken cereal ears or the raised hands of the martyrs. There are also cenotaphs and commemorative plaques located around the monument, containing the names of people killed there. The entrance to the Valley of Death marks a stone gate behind which the cobbled alleys lead both to the central monument and to the other graves.

Named in the Death Valley of the gorge in the autumn of 1939, it became the site of the murder of Polish citizens, killed by a rifle shot of a rifle or a short gun. The number of assassins is not fixed. The data show 1200-1400, but some sources also report 3000, as well as 4942, and even 6600 victims.

After the war, 306 corpses from selected ditches were exhumed. Only 39 of them have been identified. They were solemnly buried in the honorary cemetery on the Hill of Freedom in Bydgoszcz.
