Professor Stanisław Fischer Museum

Local name: Muzeum im. prof. Stanisława Fischera

The museum in Bochnia originated from collections donated by Professor Stanisław Fischer. It contains three vast departments dedicated to the history of Bochnia and local salt mine, the ethnography of different corners of the world, and art. There are pieces of art of such artists as Olga Boznańska, Julian Fałat, Włodzimierz Tetmajer, and Leon Wyczółkowski.

The museum was founded in 1959. It's located in the building of the former Dominical monastery. It couldn't be established if not the efforts of professor Stanisław Fischer who donated his collection containing old prints, paintings, folk sculptures, archeological monuments, and militaria.

Today's collections are much larger. The history of Bochnia, especially the history of salt mining, is emphasized the most. The museum houses monuments dating back to the prehistoric times. Ethnographic collections are also valuable and consist of examples of crafting from Africa, Asia, and South America. The museum also operates as an educational facility which organizes lectures and workshops within "Museum Thursdays".
