The Museum of Sculpture of Alfons Karny in Białystok is an unique institution, where the works of the notable sculptor Alfons Karny are presented. Besides exhibitions about the artist and his output, visitors can admire exhibitions presenting contemporary art, such as paintings, photographs, and graphics. The museum also organizes lessons for children and youths, taking into consideration the needs of people with disabilities.
Alfons Karny was born in 1901 in a poor family in Białystok. He was an outstanding sculptor of the Second Polish Republic, acting mainly in Warsaw. The artist's output includes about 600 portrait sculptures made of ceramics, bronze, and marble. These works are extremely valuable both in the artistic, historical, and national domains.The museum is located in the general von Driesen's historic wooden villa. There are four permanent exhibitions in museum that are called "Portraits of great Poles", "Sculptor's workshop", "History of artistic output", "Old and contemporary art from the artist's collection". In the collection of sculptures presented in the first exhibition, there are several dozen portraits that make up the Gallery of Great Poles. They depict images of well-known people such as Nicolaus Copernicus, Ignacy Paderewski, Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway, Józef Piłsudski, Fryderyk Chopin, Juliusz Słowacki, Maria Skłodowska-Curie.Less
