Church of St. Roch

Local name: Kościół św. Rocha

The temple, located on the hill of Saint Roch, is a church-monument commemorating the regaining of independence. In the past, in this place had been situated the chapel of St. Roch and the Catholic cemetery from 1839. It is one of the most stunning and original sacral buildings of the 20th century in Poland. Due to the use of a new material, which is reinforced concrete, the building enraptures with its lightness and spaciousness.

Beginning of building of the temple was in 1927. As one of the few, it wasn't destroyed during the World War II. During the fighting in 1939, it shortly functioned as German barracks, and the svelte church tower was a vantage point. After the entry of Russian troops, the Soviet authorities wanted to establish a circus in the unfinished building.

In 1945, the church was successfully completed. The building had been constructed on the plan of an octagon and consists of three towering blocks. The church has an openwork 78-meter tower, with the finial of a three-meter statue of Mother of God. Mary's figure was placed on the Piast crown.

The interior of the temple is very spacious. At the vault you can admire a picturesque rose window that depicts the symbols of the Holy Spirit and the Evangelists.Besides the main altar, there is also an altar of St. Anthony and the altar of Our Lady of the Rosary. On both sides of the main altar there are two chapels: the chapel of the St. Roch and the chapel of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn with a replica of the Vilnius painting. Inside the chapel there are also memorial tablets of Polish soldiers of the Kresy Regiments.
