The Skaupsjøen / Hardangerjøkulen Nature Reserve was established in 1981, is located in the municipalities of Eidfjord and Ulvik. Its area covers 551 km². It is famous for one of Norway's largest glaciers - Hardangerjøkulen. The area of the reserve is crossed by tourist routes, you can traverse them both in summer and in winter - on skis. The biggest attraction is the opportunity to reach the top of the glacier.
The highest point of Hardangerjøkulen rises to 1,863 meters above sea level, its area is about 70 km² (this value is constantly changing). Tourists can reach the glacier from Finse. The town has a hostel (Fineshytta) and the highest located Norwegian railway station.
The glacier is well known to fans of the Star Wars saga. Scenes of the fifth part of the series entitled "The Empire Strikes Back", the planet Hoth is nothing but Hardangerjøkulen.
