Velvet cave
Local name: Fluweelengrot
Fluweelengrot, or literally a "velvet cave", is a cave under the ruins of the Valkenberg castle. It is part of a network of tunnels, resembling a maze, which arose under the castle as a result of mining marl. The cave has a chapel, and the walls are decorated with sculptures, paintings and inscriptions.
The creation of the cave dates back to the 11th or 12th century. Since then, it was used for various purposes: during the fighting and siege of the castle it was a secret supply route, it could be used as a shelter and also a warehouse. In the eighteenth century a chapel was created here, and during World War II she gave shelter to local residents and American soldiers.
Currently, the cave along with part of the maze of tunnels is open to visitors. It is worth remembering that around the year there is a temperature of about 12 degrees Celsius. Every year during the winter there is also a Christmas market.
