Museum Beelden aan Zee
Local name: Museum Beelden aan Zee
The Beelden aan Zee Museum, whose name literally means "sculptures by the sea" is the only museum in the Netherlands dedicated entirely to sculpture. First of all, contemporary sculpture is presented here. The collection includes works of Dutch and world artists. Part of the exhibition is located in the museum building, while some of the exhibits have been placed in the open air.
In the Beelden aan Zee museum you can see, among others, the works of such world-famous artists as Karel Appel, Man Ray or Fritz Koenig, as well as Igor Mitoraj. In addition to exhibitions, the museum also has a research institute dedicated to sculpture, as well as a library, bookstore and cafe.
The museum was founded in 1994 by Theo and Linda Scholten, art enthusiasts and collectors, in particular sculpture. The museum building was designed by the architect Wim Quist. The idea of the project was not interfering with the landscape, which is why the object is almost entirely underground.
