Municipal Museum of the Hague
Local name: Gemeentemuseum Den Haag
Gemeentemuseum Den Haag (City Museum in The Hague) has collections of Dutch paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries. Particularly numerous are the works of Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) - the famous abstract artist, creator of the world-known "Composition with red, yellow and blue" ( 1921). The Gemeentemuseum itself is noteworthy - a characteristic structure of reinforced concrete and brick.
In addition to Mondrian's works, the Gemeentemuseum collections include works by Jan Steen, Jan van Goyen, Jacob van Ruisdel and many other artists from the 19th century revival of Dutch painting. In addition to painting, Italian crystals and glass, porcelain from Delft and China, antique musical instruments and Hague silver are exhibited.
The Gemeentemuseum is the last work of the architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856-1934) - a precursor of modern architecture in the Netherlands. His design was based on the number 11 - the dimensions of all elements (from halls, through showcases to bricks on the facade) are a multiple of this number.
