The museum was founded on the basis of private collections of works of art donated to the city together with the building by the painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1831-1915). The facility offers visits to the Mesdag family residence, artist's studio and painting exhibitions. You can see here, among others the largest collection of Barbizon school paintings outside of France.
