Bonnefanten Museum
Local name: Bonnefantenmuseum
The Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht has a collection of fine arts, including both contemporary and old works. Permanent museum exhibitions are divided thematically and chronologically. On the first floor you can see early Italian, Flemish and Dutch paintings, as well as an exhibition of medieval sculpture. On the second floor there is a modern art exhibition, which places great emphasis on American minimalism, Italian Arte povera and conceptual graphics. Temporary exhibitions are also held here periodically.
The Bonnefanten Museum was founded in 1884 as a historical and archaeological museum in the Limburg region. It has been in its current headquarters, designed by architect Aldo Rossi, since 1995. The profile of the museum changed in 1999, when it was transformed into a museum dedicated to fine arts, and historical and archeological exhibitions moved elsewhere.
