Basilica of Saint Servatius

Local name: Basiliek van Sint Servaas

Basilica of Saint Servatius, dedicated to the patron of the city is a building that is an example of the architecture and art of the emigrants - a regional variety of Romanism. Along with the Protestant church of St. Jana creates a historic complex at Vrijthof Square. The church is a place of many pilgrimages, due to the crypt with the tomb of Saint Servatius located in the underground. It is the oldest part of the temple, dated to 1050.

Another interesting room is the treasury, whose history also dates back to the beginnings of the church. The seal, key, pastoral, small missionary goblet and goblet, which the patron of the place once used to say, are kept here. It is also worth paying attention to the reliquary from 1580 and the late Gothic painting "Maria's Family" dated about 1500.

The church is today a three-nave basilica with a transept, presbytery, crypt and high towers. Part of the interior has retained its architecture from the period of late Romanism and mature Gothic, characterized by rich sculptural decoration. It is also worth paying attention to the richly carved capitals of the columns, depicting scenes from the "De Civitate Dei" of St. Augustine.
