Thermal Museum

Local name: Thermenmuseum

The Thermenmuseum is an archaeological museum built around the Roman baths, the largest and best preserved ancient building in the Netherlands. The museum's collection includes many fragments of statues, bas-reliefs, votive stones, tombstones and so-called Eygelshoven milestones. You can also find ceramics and glass, as well as a replica of the Simpelveld sarcophagus (its original is in the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden).

The impressive remains of the entire term complex were only discovered in 1941, while the Thermenmuseum itself has been open to the public since 1977. According to archaeologist Karen Jeneson, the bathhouse was built around 40 AD There was a large 50 -50-meter swimming pool, a cloakroom (apodyterium), heated massage room (tepidarium), public toilets, small shops, as well as a whole range of smaller pools and rooms . Remains of underfloor heating (hypocaust) are also impressive.
