Windmill De Adriaan (1779)
Local name: Molen De Adriaan (1779)
De Adriaan Mill is one of the most important and recognized monuments in Haarlem, and also a symbol of the city. It is a historic but fully functional wind mill that starts to grind the grain as an attraction for tourists. This mill is also open to the public, and in addition to the building equipment itself, you can also see a small exhibition about the history of the place.
De Adriaan Mill was built here in 1779, and owes its name to its founder and first owner, Adriaan de Booys. The mill was built on the foundations of a previously existing tower, which is part of the city's fortifications.
In April 1932, the historic mill was seriously damaged in a fire. Since then, attempts at reconstruction have been made many times, but the lack of funds has always been an obstacle. Finally, the mill was rebuilt only in 2002.
