Teylers Hofje

Local name: Teylers Hofje

Teylers Hofje in Haarlem is a complex consisting of 24 buildings located around a courtyard with a garden. It is one of the largest and impressive so-called hofjes in the city. In addition to its historical significance, this place is also interesting from the point of view of the history of architecture.

Complexes of this type, known as hofje, were created for the poor and were inhabited mostly by women, especially widows. Teylers Hofje owes its name to Pieter Teyler van der Hulst, who founded this place in the mid-eighteenth century. In accordance with his wishes, the buildings were erected in a picturesque location on the bank of the Spaarne River.

The buildings of Teylers Hofje were designed by the popular architect Leendert Viervant, who also designed several other buildings in the city during this period. The complex represents the neoclassical style, and the main gate on both sides is decorated with Doric columns.
