The square surrounded by monuments, museums, numerous cafes and shops is one of the most visited places in Haarlem. The most valuable monument is the fourteenth-century church of St. Bawona - the largest religious building in the Netherlands. The Grote Markt also has a statue of Laurens Janszoon Coster, who was credited with the invention of the printing press.
