Cathedral of St Bavo
Local name: Kathedrale Basiliek
Saint Bavo's Cathedral Basilica is a Roman Catholic temple built in the neo-Roman style. Dedicated to the patron of the city of Haarlem. After the cathedral of St. John in Den Bosch, this is the largest Roman Catholic church in the Netherlands. It is worth visiting the Cathedral Museum located under the church choir. Numerous works of art were collected here: paintings, sculptures, vestments, liturgical vessels.
The cathedral's collections include numerous goblets, monstrances, candlesticks and crosses, mainly from the time of the church's construction. A special part of the collection are items from the furnishings of the chapel of King Louis Napoleon, which once decorated the Royal Palace on Dam Square in Amsterdam.
This church is one of the last great cathedrals of Europe. It was designed in the years 1895-1930 by Jos Cuypers in cooperation with Jan Stuyt. On May 2, 1948, the temple was raised to the rank of a basilica by Pope Pius XII. In 2013, this place became famous because of the spectacular theft of six antique decorations.
